Our Mission & History
The Macie Jo Foundation is committed to confronting pediatric hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) through compassionate family support, education, and advocacy. We work to empower those affected, raise awareness, and promote early intervention to improve outcomes and prevent future cases.
Our Mission
To change the trajectory of HIE and prevent the loss of young lives through awareness, innovation, and action.
HIE is the fifth leading cause of death globally among children under 5, yet pediatric HIE research remains consistently underfunded by the federal government.
Our History
When Amy and Jonathan White welcomed their daughter, Macie Jo, into the world—born two months prematurely via emergency Cesarean section—their initial joy was met with devastating news. Medical professionals informed them that Macie had sustained a severe birth injury known as Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), with more than 80% of her brain affected as a result of significant oxygen and blood flow deprivation during delivery.
In response to Macie’s diagnosis and the many challenges they’ve faced, the Whites founded the Macie Jo Foundation—a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children with traumatic birth injuries and the families who love them. Through advocacy, financial assistance, and community outreach, the foundation seeks to turn heartbreak into hope—for Macie, and for countless others.
Your support makes a profound difference. It helps provide access to life-changing therapies, critical medical supplies, and emotional support for families walking a path no one ever expects to travel.
Macie Jo’s story is one of unimaginable difficulty—but also extraordinary strength. Though her beginning was marked by tragedy, her life continues to be a testament to love, resilience, and the power of believing in what’s possible—even when the world says otherwise.
